How to raise awareness in a very short time and in an active way about the creative potential of digital technology?

Framework

Th eDSDEN of Haute Savoie (National Education) organised on 12 February 2019 a departmental training and co-construction day on the issue of “How digital technology is changing artistic, cultural and pedagogical practices?”, for the benefit of cultural references in secondary schools, school heads and those responsible for artistic and cultural education in cultural structures.

Mission

The day, which was participatory, was co-organized with AADN - Digital Arts and Cultures. During this busy day, my “mission” was to receive groups of 15 to 20 people in succession. And in just 20 minutes, to give them an experience to overcome negative preconceptions about digital technology, in order to consider openings to educational potential.

Implementation

  • The chairs are arranged in a circle: no power posture.
  • I put the participants in action right away: everyone must write a word on a sheet of paper, which would be a third word after the words “pedagogy” and “digital”, in the idea of construction.
  • Then I give a presentation on the socio-cultural paradigm shift that digital has brought about, as well as examples of practices of Artistic and Cultural Education with digital.
  • Then, I propose to the participants to create, together, images that can become resources (because they will be put online, and accessible to everyone via a QR Code):
    • First of all, we place the phones on the ground in a way that makes sense, decided collectively by doing so. And I’m taking a picture.
    • Then, next to each telephone, we place the word that each one had written, or another, the purpose being, by this word, to share his own reflection, his own questioning. Creative work on organizing words in the image. I’m taking a picture.
    • And finally, everyone writes their first name, and the first names are added in the image. Creation of an image signed by the collective / individuals. I’m taking the picture.
  • We look at the photos together, which are the basis for a discussion.

Balance sheet

The 20 minutes went by very quickly, of course, but they were creative, constructive, thanks to the digital tools of the camera and the web. Everyone was invited to participate in a collective production, but in which everyone was able to find their place. And it has produced images, which invite constructive reflection, because the objective given to everyone was to share their own thoughts to build the resource.

Digital was therefore worked on in:

  • Its fundamental issues (the presentation).
  • Its creative potential, demanding, but possible in a very short time (the creative work of image making).
  • Its potentialities of sharing thought, creativity and heritage construction: it is because the trace remains that what we have done is invested with importance (the objective given to these images to produce a shared resource, and their almost immediate posting online).

I think that, even in a short period of time, the experience, combined with the “mini-conference” that fed the subsequent creative work, meant that everyone developed a little more precisely their own thinking on the pedagogical potential of digital technology. In addition, the collaboration of both sides has produced something unique. Digital technology also appears as a tool for collaboration and co-construction, concrete, efficient and fun, and therefore motivating.

Portfolio

In the digital age, cultural policies, whatever their field, must in my view take digital images and their uses into account by citizens, especially the younger ones.

Digital has put the image at the center of our lives. With these tools, thought and implemented in a lucid, innovative and adapted way, it is possible to invent new strategies to mobilize, give meaning and make appropriate the cultural proposals by the public.
