Express Training about the basics and best practices of digital video, for the authors of the SCAM.

The SCAM (Civil Society of Multimedia Authors) has for the first time offered its members technical training, because everyone is increasingly multidisciplinary and multiple digital video formats complicate the lives of everyone. Understand, demystify, seize technologies and tools is possible without being a great technician. This is the work of education that I made with a group of about sixty authors, on an afternoon and an evening chained. A small marathon for everyone, very constructive !

Film and Digital Video: basics and best practices

Film and video have become digital in a few years, and everyone in this interval, had become multidisciplinary, and handle daily audiovisual objects. Everything is very accessible because technology is democratized, but this ease of access seems inversely proportional to the complexity and all new technical problems involved !! Waste of time, loss of quality, misunderstandings, false economies... Handle again, concretely with what is now our daily lives, in a moment of training in two steps.

1. Understanding the basics of film and digital video. 3h.
One has the impression that everything goes very fast, that every six months they are new formats, new jargon, it is difficult to be up to date in technology... but in reality, the technical foundations for film and digital video were set since 40 years and will not move forward at least as many years. Understanding these basis, it addresses more serenely the issues and practices of audiovisual technologies, and to locate a permanent basis in the “forest” of video formats that propose to us and that will appear in the future.

2. Exploit different video file formats. 3h.
From this understanding, we will discuss best practices to streamline the circulation of films and videos from the different interlocutors in the filming, post-production and especially distribution, that is extremely multiple today. We will see very concretely, the operation of key video encoding tools.

Non-exhaustive list of technical points raised

Document synthesis

During training, I took briefing notes, which can be useful for everyone. They can be downloaded here.

Benoît Labourdette designs and leads professional training courses for new media, within training centers (CEFPF, INA Expert, Universities) as well as directly for companies or professional networks (ARTE, Forum des images, Documentaire sur Grand Ecran, Altermédia, Drôle de Trame, SCAM, NAAIS, CFI...).

The digital revolution consists in these new technologies which populate our daily life and modify the uses, the produced contents, the channels of diffusion, the economic models, the relations, the working methods...

The training allows the appropriation of these new languages, technologies and practices, in a perspective of professional construction: discover, experiment and appropriate tools, strategies, creative techniques, based on solid conceptual foundations. The goal is to equip oneself to be able to build the future of the audiovisual field in a concrete, open, innovative and economically viable way.

You will find here a few examples of internship processes, as well as downloadable deliverables.
