Production of a collective film by researchers in mathematics.

The Laboratory of Probability and Random Models (LPMA) from universities of Paris 6 and 7 invited me to lead the way at the laboratory reentry conference, in a cinematographic way. This event is since 12 years is a scientific and cultural point organized by Sonia Fourati.

Program

There was a lecture by Bernard Bru, mathematician, “Stories of probas, Chapter 2”. Then I suggested a workshop for making a collective film, which would be the subjective filmic record of this unique moment.

Presentation text

Production of a collective film with handheld cameras.

Armed with markers, paper sheets, cameras, brains, eyes, ears, we will create a movie together helped by our guest director.

Concept of the production workshop

Each of the present persons took a pen and a large sheet of paper, drew a diagram representing his perception of the conference. Then the camera circulated from hand to hand, for a shoot in sequence shot, each drawing and pronouncing live, during his filming, one or two sentences, which would “give life” to the design, as a vast cinematic exquisite corpse.

Result

Part of the work was to give confidence to everyone. Then the shooting happened in a very intense concentration, and watching the film in the dark room, was an important moment. Then I put the film in free download for the participants, who were able to share it their own way on social networks.

Here is the film :

Benoît Labourdette has developed a series of film-making workshops using pocket cameras for all audiences, including teenagers. These workshops are highly effective, creative and rewarding for young people, and therefore constructive, as well as being great fun. It’s a practice that’s evolving in step with advances in technology, its uses and issues. Benoît Labourdette passes on his knowledge during professional training courses.

Since 2006, dozens of “Pocket Films” workshops have been run by Benoît Labourdette or by people he has trained. Here are just a few examples.
