The digital practices of citizens are changing the meaning of cultural proposals, both public and private. The paradigm of access to culture has shifted and remains in motion. A training day to provide tools to consider cultural projects with renewed objectives and means.

Day led by Benoît Labourdette in the framework of the Master 2 “Management of cultural projects”, 16th promotion (Science Po Grenoble - Observatoire des Politiques Culturelles).

Pedagogical course

Morning : The bases of a relevant practice

  • Exchange on the philosophical, political and cultural issues of the digitalized world.
  • Unexpected legal elements concerning digital practices (piracy in particular).
  • Chris Anderson’s concepts: the long tail, the free economy and the bits/atoms distinction.
  • Fundamentals for good practices in the cultural field.
  • Training of the actors and support for the mutation of the agents’ practices.

Afternoon: Creative practice

  • Exchange on the questions raised by the mini-site on which the photos are published.
  • Elements of technical understanding: digital technologies in general, specific to image and sound, and specific to the Internet. QR Codes in particular.
  • More complete editorialization of the mini-site, with a specific involvement of each group. Each group will have a different role in the cooperation.

Pedagogical specificities

This day came at the end of the penultimate week of this 2-year Master’s degree. In order for them to prepare for a very concrete day on digital, each day the trainees were instructed to create creative content at the end of the day (key words of the day, a representative sentence and a photo that represents this sentence) and to put it online, with the following instructions:
JPEG - 1.4 MiB

In this way, the trainees practiced independently a creative approach with digital, and a concrete putting online of these contents, in a structured way. At the end of the day, we worked on the editorialization of the global rendering of the page. It was a practical application of the web issues, which took up the notions learned during the day.

After an introduction on digital issues, I invited the trainees to share their questions and concerns about digital and culture, so that the work of the day would be in concrete response to their needs:
JPEG - 1.1 MiB

It seems to me very important, when we talk about digital, to consider it in a very concrete, material, experiential way, because one of the stakes is to appropriate a good use of digital in a professional way (which is very different from the daily personal practice that everyone has with digital).

Thus, the trainees can, for some, live in this day an awareness and discoveries that can radically change their professional practice.

In the digital age, cultural policies, whatever their field, must in my view take digital images and their uses into account by citizens, especially the younger ones.

Digital has put the image at the center of our lives. With these tools, thought and implemented in a lucid, innovative and adapted way, it is possible to invent new strategies to mobilize, give meaning and make appropriate the cultural proposals by the public.
