The works of Benoît Labourdette

Cinema, photography, poetic writing, music, painting, installation... Benoît Labourdette is a multidisciplinary filmmaker and artist. He creates and transmits in very varied contexts. A large part of his films is freely available here, along with other creations.

• Cinema is my first and central artistic practice. Cinema is for me above all an architectural material, which I experiment with in its poetic, narrative and experimental dimensions. My approach to cinema is always situated — that is, linked to the reality of the production situation, often atypical or collective, and to the way the work is shown or shared. My films could thus rather be placed in the field of creative documentary or experimental cinema.
• Photography, by the mechanical nature of its technique, is for me a material made of time more than a visual material: in its silver salts, or its pixels today, it is time that is captured, kept, reinvented with each gaze. Time of life, time of seeing, time of poetry. I make photographic series, most often built around a formal constraint.
• Painting and graphic work are the original material of visual practice, intimately related to photography in my view, for it too contains the time of its gesture and of its imagination. I carry out calligraphy projects and pictorial approaches related to choreographic practices.
• Installation — that is, the existence of artistic forms in space and time — is crucial, for it is the way the work is transformed by its relationship with those it is meant for. I also produce installed works, often collectively, in museums, galleries and other cultural venues.
• Music and work on sound accompany all my artistic practices, personal and collective. A number of records and individual pieces are freely available here.
• Poetic writing is present in its own right, as well as across my work. It can be found in my films as much as in my graphic and musical creations.
