SPIP

SPIP (Système de Publication Pour l’Internet) is an “engine” for creating websites, known as a “CMS” (Content Management System). SPIP is free, open-source software, developed by a very active community in France since 2001. It is used for hundreds of thousands of websites: museums, town halls, departments or regions, institutions, associations, national education, CNRS, and many editorial sites, such as Le monde diplomatique, l’Humanité, Basta!...

This website is powered by SPIP.

The most widely used CMS in the world is WordPress. And there are hundreds of others, like Drupal or Joomla for example. Why choose one over the other?

Let’s compare SPIP and WordPress:

In short, WordPress lets you build a “professional” website very quickly, even if you’re a beginner. But the site’s data will be neither well-organized nor durable, and the site will quickly become obsolete. With SPIP, setting up a website requires some technical skills, but afterwards its use by editors is child’s play and clear, and the data is perfectly structured and long-lasting.

But the most important thing is not so much the tool used as the way it’s used: you can also create a very confusing site with SPIP, and a very professional one with WordPress. As far as I’m concerned, in my experience of creating websites since 1999, in the professional framework (i.e. the website is going to receive content on a regular basis from non-specialist editors), SPIP is a far superior tool to WordPress. On the other hand, in the personal framework, WorPress allows you to build a “beautiful” website much more quickly, without any technical skills.
